Gelvens has floating plants that take advantage of the denser atmosphere as well as generating and holding hydrogen in pockets in order to create an upward force and eventually float. Minerals tend to be collected from dust in the atmosphere and the floating plants attract nearby dust particles using static electricity or some other means.

Because of the shortage of CO2, plants try to trap some of the CO2 they excrete, allowing it to build up and easing the access to CO2 for photosynthesis. Some do this by developing a thick meshed structure that creates poor ventilation on the inside as well making it difficult for gases inside to escape easily. Other more elaborate plants use a transparent shell to contain gases in dissolved form.
